TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY

As with hip arthritis, the most common symptoms of knee arthritis are pain and stiffness. The knee may also swell, give way or lock.

Conservative (or nonoperative) treatment options for knee arthritis include:

  • activity modification (eg: swim or cycle as opposed to jogging)
  • pain relieving medications and knee injections
  • exercise and physical therapy
  • weight loss

Total knee replacement surgery is considered when severe pain and stiffness:

  • impede mobility
  • interferes with quality of life and sleep
  • interferes with activities of daily living
  • interferes with work and social life

KNEE ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERY

Knee arthroscopy is an operation using a telescope (arthroscope) and instruments inserted through two or more small incisions at the front of the knee, to examine and treat conditions within the knee joint, including:

  • torn meniscus
  • damaged articular cartilage
  • loose fragments of bone or cartilage
  • kneecap problems
  • knee joint infection

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) is an excellent source of patient information on hip replacement. Here are some relevant topics:
